Landlocked Central African Republic depends heavily on the Cameroonian corridor for imported goods. According to the World Bank, the Douala–Bangui corridor stretches over 1,400 km and carries more than 80% of CAR's external trade.
The ports of Douala and Kribi therefore play a strategic role. After discharge, the goods must be placed under a transit customs regime, hauled to Garoua-Boulaï / Beloko and correctly taken over under Central African procedures. See also T1 transit and transit to N'Djamena.
Douala or Kribi: which port for transit to Bangui?
Neither port is systematically better. The choice depends on the shipping line, origin port, cargo type, freight, port charges, the need for consolidation, on-carriage and final destination.
| Criterion | Port of Douala | Port of Kribi |
|---|---|---|
| Logistics ecosystem | Historic port community with a large operator network | Deep-water port still developing |
| FCL | Available depending on ocean services | Particularly suited to large container ships |
| LCL / consolidation | Historically more developed offer | To be checked with the line and consolidator |
| Route to Bangui | Douala → Yaoundé → Bertoua → Garoua-Boulaï | Kribi → Ebolowa → Yaoundé → Bertoua → Garoua-Boulaï |
| Port time | Variable by terminal and cargo | Variable by terminal and cargo |
ALC recommends comparing ocean freight + port charges + transit formalities + road haulage through to Bangui.
How does transit to CAR work?
Goods discharged in Douala or Kribi but destined for Bangui are not entered for home use in Cameroon. They are placed under transit, with suspension of Cameroonian import duties and taxes, subject to a regular file, guarantees, the authorised route and actual exit from the territory.

T1 and TTU: what is the difference?
T1
T1 is the customs transit procedure that lets goods move under customs control without being entered for home use in Cameroon. The declaration is processed in particular in CAMCIS on the Cameroonian side.
TTU — Single Transit Title
The TTU is a facilitation mechanism for goods in transit, notably to CAR and Chad. It aims to reduce duplicated formalities, improve traceability, secure goods and cut delays. For sub-regional tariff classification, see the CEMAC nomenclature.

Garoua-Boulaï / Beloko: why this crossing matters

In 2026, Cameroon Customs indicated that a Central African single window at Beloko is planned, connected to CAR Customs antennas in Douala and Kribi.

A USD 1.12 billion programme
On 12 June 2026, the World Bank approved a USD 1.12 billion programme to modernise the Douala–Bangui economic corridor. The first phase mobilises USD 525 million for investments in Cameroon, CAR and at CEMAC regional level.

Times and costs still high
The World Bank refers to journeys of 9 to 12 days under normal conditions and transport costs that can reach USD 270 per tonne in some situations. These figures describe the corridor, not an ALC quote or guaranteed timeline.
Checkpoints remain an issue
The World Bank still counted 38 checkpoints in Cameroon on the corridor, of which 17 were associated with informal payments. The new programmes aim to reduce these obstacles.

Electronic tracking and cargo security
Depending on the file, security may include customs seals, electronic devices, geolocation, cargo tracking, checks at authorised points and recording of exit. Check the exact scheme applicable to each operation.
Is the BESC mandatory for goods in transit to CAR?
Since 15 June 2026, CNCC has announced that the BESC requirement for goods in transit is suspended until further notice. This measure must be checked on the date of each shipment. See also ALC's BESC guide.
